There are many small blood vessels in the nose, so it bleeds when the nose becomes dry, when it is frequently pierced or loosened, or when an external impact is applied. In general, occasional nosebleeds do not have to worry much. However, if your nose continues to bleed after the injury, you may need medical help. Or frequent bleeding or large amounts of bleeding for no reason may require a close examination.
How to Stop Nosebleed
There are five ways to minimize and stop bleeding in the event of a nosebleed.
1. Sit upright and lean forward.
When you have a nosebleed, you are tempted to lean back to prevent blood from falling on your face. But to stop the bleeding, leaning forward a little is a better option. This is because it prevents blood from going down the throat, causing suffocation or vomiting. It is better to focus on breathing with your mouth instead of your nose and take a psychological stability.
2. I resist the urge to cover my nose.
Some people put cotton swabs and tissues in their noses to stop bleeding. This may worsen bleeding because it further stimulates blood vessels inside the nose and does not give enough pressure to stop bleeding. If you are forced to cover your nose with tissue to block the blood flow, you should put a small bundle that is not too bulky. Bulky lumps of tissue can further irritate the skin inside the nose. Instead, it is better to use a tissue or wet towel to wipe the blood from your nose and wait for the wound to clot.
3. Spray congestion reliever on your nose.
Bloodshot relief sprays such as Afrin contain drugs that tighten blood vessels in the nose. This can relieve inflammation and congestion, as well as slow or stop bleeding. Spraying the affected nostrils about three times can help.
4. Pick your nose.
Gently touching the lower part of the nasal bone with your finger and maintaining it for about 5 to 10 minutes can help compress and stop blood vessels. It is recommended to keep your hands on for more than five minutes as much as possible.
5. Repeat steps for up to 15 minutes.
If the pressure does not stop the nosebleed even if you apply pressure for about 10 minutes, apply additional pressure for about 10 minutes again. Sometimes it may be more effective to apply pressure by slightly putting a cotton swab wet with a bloodshot remover into your nostril. If the bleeding does not stop for more than 30 minutes, it is recommended to see a doctor.
Points to Note When Nosebleed Stopping
There are several follow-up care tips to prevent nosebleeds from occurring again after the bleeding subsides.
1. If you put tissue in to cover your nose, take it out gently.
Frequent sniffing can irritate the cell membrane inside the nose. In addition, if you insert a tissue to prevent nose bleeding, you should carefully pull it out because it is much more likely to bleed again if you irritate your nose.
2. Endure the temptation to blow your nose.
You are tempted to blow your nose to get rid of the dry residue of your nose. Even if the blood stops, it may take more time for the mucous membrane inside the nose to recover. Even if you blow your nose, it is better to loosen it gently without blowing it strongly.
3. Don't bend your back.
Bowing, lifting heavy objects, or other activities that cause tension can cause nosebleeds again. It is recommended to do light activities for 24 to 48 hours after nosebleeds.
4. Using an ice pack
Putting a cloth-covered ice pack on your nose can help tighten your blood vessels. If you have a nose injury, it can also be used to relieve inflammation. However, it is recommended not to use ice packs for more than 10 minutes at a time to prevent skin damage.
How to Prevent Nosebleeds
1. Keep your nose moist
Dry mucous membranes that inhale dry air or are dried due to other causes may further irritate the nose, causing nosebleeds. It can be helpful to keep the membrane moist with saline spray.
2. Nail trimming
Long sharp nails are at high risk for people with nosebleeds. If your nails are too long or sharp, picking your nose without thinking increases the probability of nose bleeding.
3. Use a humidifier
Humidifiers can help prevent mucous membranes from drying by maintaining moisture in the air. It can be used during sleep to prevent nosebleeds.
